What are the 'HIDDEN COSTS' that international students should be prepared for?

Are you planning for higher studies in USA?

If yes, you should be aware of the additional 'hidden costs'- Expenses which are not mentioned in brochures.
Health insurance: Every campus has its own health insurance partner. One should be very careful in choosing the insurance plan. Many costs are not covered in basic plan such as ambulance charges, dental and eye care, which are pretty expensive.
Meal Plans: If you are staying in dorms you need to carefully select meal plans as you can't cook in your room. Meal plans are weekly. Any healthy human being would require three meals a day. So, one would need 21 meals for the whole week. If you select 10 meals per week to save money either you would stay hungry or end up spending more on junk food.
Summer Cost: The form I20 (issued by a school or university which has granted admission to you) provides the annual cost for nine months per academic year. All undergraduate students should carefully calculate the cost involved during the three months of summer if they plan to stay back in the US. You need to vacate you dorm during summer vacation through there are some dorms which stay open but they charge extra.
Software Licence: Students need to purchase original licences for various software programs. These costs are generally not mentioned in the I20 form.
Extra Credits: If you wish to do extra credits in your program you need to pay for that.
Exam or lab fees: Some universities do not mention the exam or lab fees in the estimated cost.
Use of facilities: Some universities charge extra for the use of recreational, educational, sports and music facilities. These costs are also not mentioned in brochure.
Parking: Some universities have substantial parking charges for cars and even bicycles. One should check the annual parking charges before buying a vehicle.
Subscription fees: There are subscription fees in most universities for all the meets organized by the university / student union.
Orientation fee: All international students must go through the orientation week. This helps them to understand the university and the new country better. Most universities charge an orientation fee, which is mostly not stated in the I20.
