What is the Graduate Record Examination (GRE)? Exam pattern, Fees & Test registration.

Image result for gre  Students who plan to study in US Universities for Masters' / PhD, need to take a standardized test - The Graduate Record Examination (GRE). The test is intended to measure the abilities of general academic nature, regardless of fields of specialization. The GRE General Test is offered as a computer-based exam and administered by Education Testing Services. The cost of taking the test is US$205 as of May 2017. This Test comprises of six sections. The first section is always the analytical writing section involving separately timed issue and argument tasks. The next five sections include two verbal reasoning sections, two quantitative reasoning sections, and either an experimental or research section. These five sections may occur in any order. The experimental section does not count towards the final score but is not distinguished from the scored sections. The verbal section is scored on a scale of 130-170 and assesses reading comprehension, critical reasoning, and vocabulary usage ability. The quantitative sections include basic high school level mathematical knowledge and reasoning skills. This section is scored on a range of 130–170. The analytical writing section consists of two different essays, an "issue task" and an "argument task". The writing section is graded on a scale of 0–6. GRE score is valid for 5 years. The entire testing procedure lasts about 3 hours 45 minutes. The GRE may be retaken as many times as one wishes to. However, one can only take the GRE once per calendar month, and up to 5 times per year. The use and weight of GRE scores vary considerably not only from school to school, but from department to department, and from program to program.

In addition to the General Test, there are also six GRE Subject Tests testing knowledge in the specific areas of Biology; Chemistry, Literature in English, Mathematics, Physics and Psychology. Subject Tests can help student to stand out from other applicants by emphasizing his knowledge and skill level in a specific area. The GRE Subject Test fee is US$150 worldwide. These tests are offered on any Saturdays of September, October and April. The length of each exam is 170 minutes. The Subject Tests are given at paper. Subject Test yields a total score on a 200–990 score scale, in 10-point increments. Test scores are accepted by thousands of graduate schools, including individual departments or divisions within these schools.
